Agartala: Feb 24. The Bihar government has decided to prohibit the open sale of meat and fish near educational institutions, religious places, and crowded public areas across the state, citing concerns related to public health, social harmony, and environmental hygiene.

Announcing the decision, Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha stated that the move is intended to discourage what he described as “violent tendencies” among children, while also promoting a cleaner and more orderly public environment. He added that the measure aligns with the state’s broader initiative to regulate meat sales in urban areas.

Under the new directive, open-air meat and fish stalls operating near schools, temples, mosques, and other high-footfall zones will not be permitted. Authorities are expected to ensure that sales are conducted only through properly licensed and regulated outlets that meet hygiene standards.

The decision has sparked debate, with supporters calling it a step toward better sanitation and civic discipline, while critics question the reasoning behind linking food sales to behavioral concerns. The development was first reported by The New Indian Express.
