Major vacancies across TWD, SC & OBC departments; recruitment yet to catch pace

Agartala, Mar 17:
The Tripura government is currently grappling with a significant staff shortage across key welfare departments, with 445 posts lying vacant in the Tribal Welfare (TWD), Scheduled Caste (SC) Welfare, and Other Backward Classes (OBC) Welfare Departments.

This was informed by Minister-in-charge Bikash Debbarma during the Assembly session on Tuesday while replying to an unstarred question raised by Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhary.

According to the Minister, vacancies exist across all categories of posts, reflecting a widespread gap in administrative and field-level staffing.

In Group-A, one post of Deputy Director remains vacant. Under Group-B, vacancies include 1 Accounts Officer, 11 Special Officers, and 1 Research Officer. Additionally, in Group-B (Non-Gazetted), 2 posts of Office Superintendent are yet to be filled.

A substantial portion of the vacancies falls under Group-C, indicating a shortage at the operational level. These include 137 Supervisors, 42 Lower Division Clerks (LDC), 35 Extension Officers, 26 Investigators, 16 Amin, 7 Accountant-cum-Storekeepers, along with several other posts such as Inspectors, Junior Engineers, and Research Assistants.

In Group-D, vacancies are also significant, with 90 Peon posts, 17 Night Guards, and several other support staff positions like Cook, Helper, and Sweeper remaining unfilled.

The Minister further informed that only 89 posts have been filled over the last three financial years, highlighting the slow pace of recruitment.

  • In 2023–24, 30 posts were filled, including 29 LDCs and 1 Peon.

  • In 2024–25, 49 posts were filled, including 46 LDCs, 1 Peon, and 2 Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS).

  • In 2025–26, only 10 LDC posts have been filled so far.

On the recruitment front, Debbarma stated that a requisition has been sent to the Joint Recruitment Board of Tripura (JRBT) for filling 50 Supervisor posts. Recruitment for the remaining vacancies will be initiated after necessary approval from the government.

The data points to a continuing gap between sanctioned posts and actual recruitment, particularly in departments directly linked to welfare delivery, raising concerns over administrative efficiency and implementation capacity.
