674 People on Nipah Virus Contact List in Kerala, Surveillance Tightened
Thiruvananthapuram, July 18:
A total of 674 individuals have been placed on the Nipah virus contact list across multiple districts in Kerala, according to Health Minister Veena George.
The district-wise data shows that Palakkad accounts for the highest number with 426 people, followed by Malappuram (131), Kozhikode (115), and one case each from Ernakulam and Thrissur districts.
Minister George stated that 84 individuals have been removed from the contact list after completing their isolation period. Among them, 81 were from Malappuram, two from Palakkad, and one from Ernakulam. Currently, 12 people in Malappuram and 17 in Palakkad are undergoing treatment in isolation.
So far, 88 samples have tested negative for Nipah virus. However, surveillance continues across the state. Authorities have placed 32 individuals under highest-risk surveillance and 111 individuals in the high-risk category.
In response to the situation, the Health Minister has directed the One Health Centre for Nipah Research to document all Nipah-related matters. An ICMR team also visited Malappuram for field inspection.
A high-level review meeting was convened on Thursday under the leadership of Minister Veena George. Key officials in attendance included the NHM State Mission Director, Health Department Director, Director of Medical Education, District Collectors, District Medical Officers, and law enforcement officials.
The Kerala government continues to maintain heightened vigilance to prevent the spread of the Nipah virus and ensure timely intervention and treatment.
