Assam: Feb 12. In a significant political development in Assam’s hill district, former Congress leader and founder of the People’s Party, Daniel Langthasa, formally joined the National People’s Party (NPP) on Thursday at a massive public convention in Maibang, Dima Hasao.
Langthasa, who began his political career with the Indian National Congress, had floated the People’s Party in September 2025 with a focus on championing indigenous rights. His induction into the NPP took place in the presence of Tipra Motha founder and royal scion Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma. Also present at the high-profile event were prominent “One North East” leaders, including former BJP spokesperson Mmhonlumo Kikon and NPP Working President James K. Sangma, along with other senior party representatives.
Political observers view Langthasa’s move as a major shift in the district’s political landscape, given his longstanding association with both Congress and regional politics in Dima Hasao. The convention witnessed an impressive turnout, underscoring his influence in the constituency and hinting at a possible realignment in local political equations.
Welcoming him into the party, NPP leaders described the induction as a strategic boost to the party’s expanding presence in Assam, particularly in tribal-dominated regions. They stated that his entry strengthens the broader “One North East” vision aimed at promoting unity, indigenous empowerment, and grassroots development across the region.
Party leaders expressed confidence that Langthasa’s grassroots experience and political acumen would enhance the NPP’s representation at various democratic forums. They reiterated their commitment to safeguarding tribal identity, protecting indigenous rights, generating employment for youth, and ensuring inclusive development.
The event concluded with party leaders thanking the people of Dima Hasao for their enthusiastic participation and continued support.
