Shillong, June 4: The 73rd Plenary Session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) was held in Shillong on Wednesday, bringing together governors, chief ministers, and senior officials from across the northeastern states to discuss development priorities for the region.

The meeting was chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and focused on key sectors including investment promotion, infrastructure development, connectivity, border trade, and economic growth.

During the session, Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha presented reports of the High-Level Task Forces on Investment Promotion and Infrastructure & Connectivity. The recommendations of these task forces are expected to be taken forward through a high-level steering committee comprising chief ministers and union cabinet ministers of the concerned departments.

Addressing the plenary, Amit Shah stressed the need for accelerated development in the Northeast through industrialization, improved connectivity, and greater investment. He also highlighted the importance of strengthening ease of doing business and operationalizing single-window clearance systems to attract industries and create employment opportunities.

The meeting reviewed the progress of various Chief Minister-led High-Level Task Forces constituted for sectors such as tourism, agriculture and horticulture, infrastructure and connectivity, investment promotion, sports, handloom and handicrafts, and food self-sufficiency.

Discussions were also held on the North East Vision Plan 2047, a long-term roadmap aimed at promoting sustainable development, economic growth, and regional connectivity across the Northeastern states.

Leaders at the meeting underlined the strategic importance of the Northeast as a gateway to Southeast Asia and the Indo-Pacific region, with a focus on expanding trade, investment, and cross-border connectivity.
