Khowai, October 1: The Department of Information and Cultural Affairs (ICA), Tripura, organised a state-level birth anniversary programme commemorating legendary musician and composer Kumar Sachin Dev Burman at the New Town Hall in Khowai on Thursday.

The programme began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by State Minister Animesh Debbarma, followed by floral tributes to the portrait of Sachin Dev Burman.

MLA Pinaki Das Chowdhury, Director of the Department of Information and Cultural Affairs Bimbisar Bhattacharya, Khowai Zilla Parishad Chairperson Aparna Singh Roy, and other dignitaries attended the programme.

Sachin Dev Burman was remembered through musical performances highlighting his enduring contribution to Indian music and his deep connection with Tripura's cultural heritage.

Minister highlights Sachin Dev Burman's musical legacy

Addressing the gathering, Minister Animesh Debbarma highlighted Sachin Dev Burman's lasting musical legacy and his deep connection with the traditions and people of Tripura. He said that although decades have passed since the musician's era, his compositions continue to resonate across generations.

The minister noted that Sachin Dev Burman was born into Tripura's royal family on October 1, 1906, but it was his music that established his enduring legacy. His musical journey was influenced by folk traditions, rural life, rivers, fields, boatmen and ordinary people.

Even after moving from Tripura to Kolkata and later Mumbai, Debbarma said, his music continued to reflect the influence of his roots.

Youth urged to preserve cultural identity

Emphasising the importance of cultural identity, the minister urged young people not to lose touch with their origins while pursuing modern creative opportunities. He encouraged young artists to draw inspiration from Tripura's cultural heritage while using contemporary platforms to reach wider audiences.

Debbarma particularly urged the younger generation to promote Kokborok music, Bengali folk traditions and indigenous musical instruments through modern digital platforms.

He said traditions remain alive when younger generations reinterpret and carry them forward rather than simply preserving them as part of the past.

Message for aspiring artists

Highlighting Sachin Dev Burman's journey, the minister also encouraged aspiring artists to remain persistent in the face of setbacks and failures.

He said talent is not determined by one's hometown or financial circumstances and that young people from smaller towns can reach wider audiences through dedication, creativity and technology.

The minister further said that commemorating Sachin Dev Burman's birth anniversary should go beyond ceremonial tributes and speeches. Such occasions should also inspire efforts to nurture emerging talent and create opportunities for young artists to showcase their abilities.

The programme concluded with musical tributes to Sachin Dev Burman, celebrating his timeless contribution to Indian music and his enduring connection with Tripura's cultural heritage.
