Agartala, September 10: The Tipra Motha Party is set to secure 1,148 seats unopposed in the ongoing Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) Village Committee elections, according to a party-wise un-contested seat breakdown.
The figure represents nearly 25% of the 4,597 Village Committee seats being contested across the TTAADC areas. The data shows TIPRA Motha nominees as the sole candidates in 1,148 seats, while BJP candidates are listed as unopposed in another 31 seats.
The strongest concentration of TIPRA Motha's unopposed seats is in West Tripura district, where the party has 491 such seats, followed by Khowai with 317 and Sepahijala with 263. Together, these three districts account for 1,071 of the 1,148 TIPRA Motha seats listed in the table.
Other unopposed TIPRA Motha seats include 37 in Gomati, 19 in Dhalai, 14 in South Tripura, seven in North Tripura and none in Unakoti, according to the district-wise breakdown.
The development comes as TIPRA Motha has emerged as the largest political force in the nomination process for the Village Committee polls. According to reports citing State Election Commission data, the party submitted nominations for around 4,390 of the 4,597 seats, covering nearly 95.5% of the total. CPI(M) candidates were fielded in 2,487 seats, while the BJP submitted nominations for 1,974 seats.
A total of 10,936 candidates filed 10,958 nomination papers for the 4,597 seats across 587 Village Committees. Reports said 1,169 seats had received only a single nomination at the scrutiny stage, although that figure was yet to become the final number of uncontested seats.
The distinction is important because candidates could withdraw their nominations until September 11, after which the final list of contesting candidates will determine which seats are actually decided without a poll. Voting is scheduled for September 28, with counting on October 5.
The large number of single-nomination seats is likely to become one of the major talking points of the 2026 Village Committee elections, particularly as opposition parties have alleged obstruction and intimidation during the nomination process. The State Election Commission, however, has maintained that the nomination process was conducted fairly and said complaints relating to incidents outside the formal process were referred to police.
