Dr. Sunil Kalai, Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at Tripura University, has appealed to the Government of Tripura to introduce Bachelor's Degree programmes in Journalism and Mass Communication in degree colleges across the state.
In a public statement addressed to Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, Higher Education Minister Kishor Barman, and other public representatives, Dr. Kalai said that although digital communication, artificial intelligence, social media, and information technology are expanding rapidly, students in Tripura still do not have access to undergraduate Journalism and Mass Communication programmes within the state.
He stated that Tripura University's Department of Journalism and Mass Communication has already prepared a comprehensive undergraduate syllabus aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, making the programme ready for implementation.
According to Dr. Kalai, introducing the course would create teaching and research opportunities for NET, JRF, and PhD-qualified scholars while preparing students for careers in journalism, digital media, filmmaking, advertising, public relations, corporate communication, content creation, government communication, and media entrepreneurship.
He also said the programme would strengthen media literacy, help students identify misinformation and fake news, preserve Tripura's cultural heritage through documentation and storytelling, and contribute to better governance by producing skilled communication professionals.
Calling it a "visionary step," Dr. Kalai urged the state government to introduce undergraduate Journalism and Mass Communication programmes in degree colleges, saying the initiative would empower youth, generate employment, strengthen higher education, and prepare Tripura for a communication-driven future.
