Agartala, June 29: A demand for the establishment of a Government Degree College in Jampuijala Sub-Division has been raised by Dr. Sunil Kalai, Head of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at Tripura University, through an open letter addressed to the Chief Minister of Tripura.

In his letter, Dr. Kalai highlighted that Jampuijala, despite being a full-fledged Sub-Division with a large population and several Higher Secondary Schools, does not have a single Government Degree College. He stated that this forces students to travel long distances for higher education, while many students from economically weaker backgrounds are compelled to discontinue their studies due to financial difficulties and transportation challenges.

The letter emphasized that the lack of a degree college has become a major barrier to the educational, social, and economic development of the region. It particularly affects students from remote villages, women students, and first-generation learners seeking access to higher education.

Dr. Kalai urged the government to approve the establishment of a Government Degree College in Jampuijala at the earliest, allocate the required land and financial resources, and direct the Higher Education Department to conduct a feasibility study for the proposed institution.

He further suggested that the college should offer undergraduate programmes in Arts, Science, Commerce, and skill-oriented courses in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

According to the letter, the establishment of such an institution would improve access to higher education, reduce dropout rates, promote women's education, empower tribal and rural youth, and contribute to balanced regional development in Jampuijala Sub-Division.

The appeal reflects a growing public demand for expanding higher education infrastructure in underserved areas of Tripura.
