Kokborok feature film Khaani, produced by 18 Hills Films, has been officially selected for the 31st Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF) 2025 ahead of its scheduled release on May 24 at Dasharath Bhavan Hall, Supari Bagan, Agartala.
Directed by award-winning filmmaker Ploto Debbarma, Khaani is a psychological investigative thriller set in the fictional village of Khumpuimura. The story follows a newly appointed police officer whose routine posting gradually turns into a disturbing investigation after the discovery of severed body parts in the village.
The film explores hidden truths beneath the peaceful rural setting and unfolds into a suspenseful psychological narrative rooted in indigenous life and culture.
Speaking about the film, director Ploto Debbarma said the aim was to create an authentic cinematic experience reflecting the rhythms of rural life while taking audiences through an emotionally intense and suspense-driven journey.
The film is produced by Payel Debbarma and Kishan Debbarma, with co-production support from Waashock and Aditya Modak. Cinematography and editing have been handled by Adwaita Chakma, while assistant direction is managed by Jacob Tripura, Jackson Debbarma, and Rajkiran Tripura. Music for the film has been composed by Halog Jamatia.
The cast includes Ruhi Debbarma, Madhusudan Debbarma, Pohar Jamatia, Ajoy Tripura, and Hemchandra Tripura in important roles.
The KIFF 2025 selection ahead of the film’s official release marks a significant recognition for Kokborok cinema and Tripura’s growing independent film industry.
