Agartala: Feb 26. The Supreme Court of India today directed that elections to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) be conducted before April 15, and that Village Committee (VC) elections be completed by May, ahead of the monsoon season.

The interim order was passed by a Bench comprising Justice Manoj Misra and Justice Manmohan while hearing Writ Petition (Civil) No. 786/2025 filed by Pradyot Deb Burman.

During the hearing, the State Election Commission (SEC), Tripura, submitted an affidavit seeking an extended timeline for conducting the polls, citing security-related concerns. The Commission informed the Court that adequate deployment of security personnel and necessary logistical arrangements would require additional time, and accordingly proposed that the elections be held in September.

The Court, however, declined to accept the extended schedule proposed by the State Election Commission (SEC). It directed the Commission to conduct the elections by May and to file an affidavit outlining the schedule for holding the polls within the timeframe indicated by the Court.

Further, the SEC has been instructed to submit a final affidavit by April 15, confirming compliance with the directions issued by the Supreme Court of India.

Earlier, on February 11, the Supreme Court of India had directed the State Election Commission (SEC) to clearly spell out the timeline for completing the Village Committee (VC) election process. The Court had also asked the Commission to examine the feasibility of holding the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) and VC elections simultaneously.

The Supreme Court of India has scheduled the matter for final hearing on February 18, when the final judgment in the case is expected to be delivered.
