Tripura's Asmita Dey scripted history by becoming the first Indian judoka to win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, clinching the women's 48kg title at the Commonwealth Games 2026.
The 23-year-old from Belonia, South Tripura, defeated Canada's Heidi Quach 2-1 in a thrilling final that was decided in the Golden Score period. After falling behind early by conceding a yuko and receiving a penalty, Asmita mounted a remarkable comeback, levelling the contest before sealing victory with a decisive attack in sudden-death overtime.
Born into a humble family, Asmita is the daughter of a bicycle mechanic. Despite financial hardships, she pursued her dream of becoming a judoka after initially competing in athletics. She joined the Tripura Sports School in 2015 and later earned a place at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) National Centre of Excellence in Bhopal, where she has trained since 2018.
Asmita has consistently represented India on the international stage, winning medals at the Asian Open, Junior Asia Cup, Commonwealth Judo Championships and other major tournaments.
