A 32-year-old woman died following a road traffic accident on Agartala flyover, with police continuing their investigation to determine the exact circumstances that led to her death.
The deceased has been identified as Eli Debbarma, daughter of Bilas Debbarma, a resident of Supari Bagan, opposite Dasharath Bhavan in Agartala.
According to police-based reports, information about the accident was received at the police station, following which an officer rushed to Indira Gandhi Memorial (IGM) Hospital. Eli Debbarma had already been brought to the hospital after the incident, where doctors declared her brought dead.
Police said preliminary information suggested that she was accompanied by friends around the time of the incident. Reports also indicated that she may have been travelling on another person's motorcycle. However, police initially said that this claim had not yet been officially verified, and the exact sequence of events remained under investigation.
A police officer quoted in initial reports said that the name of one person had surfaced during the investigation, but authorities were not disclosing further details at that stage as verification was still underway. The exact circumstances surrounding the accident and the cause of Eli Debbarma's death are expected to become clearer after the investigation and post-mortem examination.
Her body has been sent for a post-mortem examination at GB Pant Hospital, which is expected to help determine the exact medical cause of death. Police have registered the matter as a road traffic accident and are continuing their investigation.
Meanwhile, another report has claimed that the incident occurred on August 14, when Eli Debbarma was allegedly travelling as a pillion rider on a motorcycle and fell from the moving vehicle on the flyover. That report further identified the motorcycle rider and claimed he was being questioned by police. However, these specific details were not confirmed in the earlier police-based reports, which stated that the motorcycle-related allegations were still being verified.
Therefore, authorities are expected to rely on the post-mortem findings, witness statements and other evidence to establish how the fatal accident occurred and whether any further legal action is warranted.
The tragic incident has once again drawn attention to road safety concerns on Agartala's busy flyover, as police continue to investigate the circumstances behind the death of the 32-year-old woman.
